課程概述

口筆譯基礎概念介紹,為口譯組與筆譯組學生的共同必修課.課程內容包含口筆譯理論、實務、與技巧的基本介紹,以單元方式進行,由二位老師合授。

This is an introduction to translation and interpretation studies for Master’s level graduate students. It has practical applications, but it is more explicitly research and theory oriented. It is team taught by Darryl Sterk, who will cover translation studies in the first half of the course, and Sheryl Chang, who will cover interpretation studies in the second half.

課程目標
1.介紹口筆譯基本概念
2.介紹口筆譯發展沿革
3.介紹口筆譯產業現況

Understand the history of modern translation and interpretation studies over the past several decades, including the way the field is now demarcated. Get familiar with the technical lingo; as the vocabulary translation studies scholars use in their studies is often borrowed from other fields we will also explore the larger contexts of translations studies. Our most important goal is to get a sense of the questions local and international scholars have asked about translation and interpretation and the sorts of answers they have provided, with a view to asking questions of our own and pursuing independent research in a quest to answer them. Secondarily, we will find out where the translation studies community is located, in Taiwan and abroad.

說明
1.
Thesis proposal
5%
For the thesis proposal, all you have to do is write a title, subtitle and abstract, including question, thesis, method, keywords and a preliminary table of contents. Of course this doesn’t have to be what you do your thesis on, it’s just to get you thinking of something that interests you personally and might interest others as well.
2.
Thesis evaluation and presentation
15%
For the thesis evaluation and presentation you have to find a Master’s thesis, figure out the problematique, thesis, and methodology, attend to the structure, and then critique it, asking what the point is, why someone should have bothered writing it, why anyone should bother reading it. You will write this up in a report of a couple of thousand words and give a multimedia presentation on it to the other class members.
3.
Assignments
20%
Assignments include exercises in the textbook and critical responses to the weekly readings, critical meaning that on the foundation of understanding the main point and the argument you engage with the writer, often disagreeing or arriving at your own insights. You’re also required to think about how these theories or approaches might be applied in research. These are typically due before class on CEIBA.
4.
Attendance & participation (Sterk)
10%
“Attendance & participation means coming on time and participating enthusiastically, congenially, and respectfully. I will take attendance. There will be a penalty for lateness. Surfing the internet on your iphone or computer does not count as participation!” This is the blurb I gave the undergrads. I’m sure in a grad class none of this will be a problem.
